Who Are NPFL Top Scorers Since 2012, Where Are They Now and How are They Faring ?


Mfon Udoh (Akwa United) and Ibrahim Sunusi (Nasarawa United) Joint Highest Scorers 2018/ 19 Season, 10 Goals Each
Akwa United ’s Mfon Udoh and Nasarawa United forward Ibrahim Sunusi emerged joint highest goal scorers for NPFL 2018/ 19 season after both players netted ten goals each for their respective clubs.



* Mfom Udoh is perhaps the most consistent goal scorer in NPFL. He has been described as a complete forward who possesses pace, good positioning, natural finishing as well as the ability to provide assists.

He currently holds the record for highest number of goals scored in the NPFL in a single season (23 goals in 2013. He is also the first player to score over 35 goals in two consecutive seasons in Nigeria. Between 2012 and 2014, he scored 39 goals in the regular league and 3 in national cup competitions, for a total of 41 goals in two seasons.

Udoh was the highest goal scorer in the 2016 CAF champions league with nine goals and was all scored in the group stage of the competition.

Surprisingly, Mfon Udoh. is still. a player of Akwa United, and many stories behind why hhe's not able to play abroad up untill this moment.


* Ibrahim Sunusi, the 19 years old emerging striker has shown he can become another world class goal poacher, even with the recent brace he scored for Nigeria U23 national team to ouster Sudan in the Afcon qualifiers.

Sunusi officially is still a player of Nasarawa United, but his days are numbered as rumour of him leaving Nasarawa for Kano Pillars are making the rounds; as he is still seeing the possibility of moving to Turkey.




Junior Lokosa (Kano Pillars) Highest Goal Scorer 2017/ 18 with 19 Goals



Junior Lokosa playing for Kano Pillars, scored 19 goals to emerge the highest goal scorer for Npfl 2017/ 18 season.

Junior Lokosa is a "Fox in the Box" kind of striker, imposing himself upon defenders and difficult to stop or see coming in the right position to strike. Lokosa was signed in Kano Pillars mid season of 2017, and with immediate effect showed what kind of striker he is by scoring 5 goals... and the next season in 2018, he emerged the highest goal scorer in Npfl.

Lokosa was one of the two players given a wild card to become the second striker for the Super Eagles team going to Russia 2018 Fifa World cup, but ended up as an alternate player, after a more established Simon Kalu was selected ahead of him.

Junior Lokosa now playing for Esperance of Tunisa...and just in his first season has helped Esperance win Caf Champions league, scoring 3 goals.



Anthony Okpotu, Lobi Stars Highest goal scorer  2016/ 2017 Season with19 Goals



Anthony Okpotu beat Stephen Odey to the Npfl top scorer award after netting 19 goals for Lobi Stars in the 2016/ 17 season, claiming the award for the first time and finishing one goal ahead of former MFM’s leading marksman Odey, who left the league mid way to sign for FC Zurich in Switzerland.

Anthony Okpotu may have been a flash in pan, though he possesses all the attributes of a good striker and has switched between playing for Lobi stars and playing abroad. He signed for Al-Ittihad Tripol. Libya, but didn't get to play all through 2013 - 2014 season, then he had to return to Lobi Stars.

His emerging as the highest goal scorer in npfl 2016/ 17 season with a whooping 19 goals may have surprised himself and anyone who has been following his career.

Okpotu has since then signed for Moroccan club Difaâ Hassani El Jadidi, played a season 2017 - 2018 without scoring a goal. He is now on loan to KF Laçi in Albania where he has just seored one goal in 10 appearances in the on going season.





Godwin Obaje Wikki Tourists, Highest Goal Scorer 2015/2016 seaon with 18 Goals



Godwin Obaje emerged top scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League in 2015 - 2016 season.

Godwin Obaje is a very good striker in all ramifications, his positioning, his eyes for goals and his strike power is something you cannot overlook. He has once been the most wanted striker in npfl. He had since played for IfeanyiUbah FC and Plateau United during their continental campaign in 2017 and 2018.

Obaje currently play for JS Kairouan in Tunisia Professional Ligue 1 and has scored one goal in two appearances.




 Gbolahan Salami, Warri Wolves, Highest Goal Scorer 2014/2015 with 17 Goals



 Gbolahan was the highest goal scorer in the NPFL in the 2014/2015 campaign while playing for Warri Wolves. He scored 17 goals which saw Delta state darling team finish runners-up in the final npfl standing.that season

Salami's goal-scoring feat led him to join Red Star on loan and also go on trial with Aston Villa before finally signing for KuPS in Finland elite league 2016, where he scored 22 goals in 53 appearances. He later played for Irtysh Pavloda. in Kazakhstan Premier league and scored only 4 goals in 17 appearances in 2017 - 2018 season.

Salami last played forAl-Qaisumah in Saudi Arabian first division where he scored 8 goals in 22 appearances. He is currently a free agent.





Mfon Udoh, Enyimba, Highest Goal Scorer 2013/ 24 with 23 Goals



Mfon Udoh shattered the league goal record when he scored 23 goals in a single season in the 2013/2014 campaign with Enyimba.  He is currently the highest ever goal scorer in the history of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

 Much have said about Mfon Udoh at the beginning of this article. However, his achievement that season made him the first player since the Nigerian top flight became professional in 1990 to score more than 20 goals in one season.

 Udoh's feat was not enough as Enyimba could only finish second in the league. But  got consolation in the Federation Cup that same season as they beat Dolphins 2-1 in the final with Udoh scoring one of the goals.

As I said above, Udoh still play for Akwa United and perhaps, the biggest star in Npfl today.




 Victor Namo, Nasarawa United, Highest Goal Scorer 2012/ 13 with 18 Goals



In the 2012/2013 Nigeria league season, Nasarawa United's Victor Namo picked up the golden boot.

Victor Namo, who won the league title with Kano Pillars in the 2007/2008 and 2011/2012 seasons, found the back of the net 18 times but Nasarawa finished a disappointing 13th in the league table.

Namo's impressive performances attracted interest abroad as he left Nasarawa to join Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya in January 2014. V.I.C is with the North African team till date.
