Nwankwo Kanu and El-Hadji Diouf are among the African football legends expected in Kano on December 14 to play a novelty match against Kano Pillars.
The game is aimed at raising funds to help Internally Displaced Persons in the country.
Chairman of the MATCH4IDPS Local Organising Committee, Abi Goodman, told reporters in Kano on Monday that it was necessary to alleviate the suffering of IDPs, who are victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Goodman added that the objective of the match was to raise awareness of the situation going on in IDP camps across the country.
She said, “The match is designed to kick-start a campaign to raise funds for the IDPs.”
According to her, the move has become necessary because donors such as the United Nations, UNICEF and other Non-Governmental Organisations have run out of funds.
Moo Mustapha, who is the General Coordinator, African Legends, said Stephen Appiah of Ghana, Mohammed Kalou of Sierra Leone, Fabian Makati of South Africa, Samson Siasia, Tijani Babangida, Lukas Radebe of South Africa, Garba Lawal, Mutiu Adepoju, Peter Rufai and Daniel Amokachi would also feature in the game.
Kanu, who was present during the press conference alongside Diouf, appealed to the Federal Government and state governments to support the event.
The former Nigeria captain said, “We have to do this for the IDPs because people only talk and forget about them. We therefore call on the Federal Government, governors, corporate organisations, wealthy individuals and Nigerians in the Diaspora to respond positively to this clarion call.”
