Gernot Rohr Breaks the Age-long Tradition in Nigeria
The tradition here in Nigeria was after every FIFA World Cup comes a time of "Going back to the drawing board." The NFF Chairman and the national team coaches were sacked and the foreign ones probably, didn't bother returning back to the job.
Even Coaches you may say were successful; coaches like Clemence Westerhof had to resign. And Stephen Keshi was forced out of the job.
The tradition was set to repeat itself with the sacking of NFF president Amaju Pinnick, which was masterminded by Chris Giwa and Minister of Sports Solomon Dalung. But Pinnick had gone one step ahead to forestall their plans by upholding his mandate with FIFA.
Before Russia 2018 World cup, Pinnick has also opted for continuity by extending the contract of Gernot Rohr to 2019, after he successfully executed the world cup qualification in a manner beyond anyone's expectations.
And in the wisdom of NFF technical committee, it would be better for Rohr to continue in the job to build a more formidable team that will not only qualify for Africa Cup of Nation, but to win the premium competition and return Nigeria in it's rightful place as one of the best footballing nation in Africa. Note, Nigeria didn't qualify for the last two editions.
With these playing out, Gernot Rohr became the only Foreign coach (indeed, the only coach) that has ever survived as Nigeria national team Head coach after a Fifa world cup...breaking the age-long tradition.
