New coach Randy Waldrum said he was very impressed, not only because the Super Falcons won the Turkish women's cup trophy in style, but the way the Super Falcons displayed unusual strength piling pressure upon pressure on their opponents, rarely giving them any breathing space for the whole span of each game.
The individual skills of the girls are not in doubt at all, in handling the ball and running circus on the 20 yard box of their opponents. Ordega, Payne, Oshoala, KANU, Ayinde, Ihezuo...has all shown they are world class players who can compete at the highest level.
The Turkish tournament gave me an opportunity to assess the team both individually and collectively and I must say I am very pleased with the girls.
The team have a lot of depth going forward. You could substitute about four or five girls upfront and still get almost the same level of tenacity and diverse ball skills. That gives you as a coach an options to introduce an outright attacking system of play.
More need to be done in the midfield, Chikwelu is quiet strong on the ball and distribute passes well, there should be a better synergy between the defense and midfield.
There was also a good blend between the older, more experienced players and the younger upcoming players. I like what I saw and hope working with the team will bring some more improvement in effectiveness and tactical discipline.
Winning the Turkish women's cup is like a welcome gift to me and I hope we will win more trophies in the months to come and give our fans something to be delighted about.
