Guinea Bissau vs Nigeria: How Super Eagles Plan to Play their Last Group Game in AFCON 2021
Nigeria is already through to the round of 16 - that assured! But Super Eagles requires at least a draw to ensure they top Group D.
Austin Eguaveon, Nigeria's manager, may want to maintain the momentum and may not go for an outright change of the team that has so impressed.
There's the temptation to play the same XI from the opening couple of games, after all, you are not meant to change a winning team...and there's also a record to break.
While Eguavoen’s selections have produced six points from an available six, there will be a target of claiming three wins from three games, a clean sweep the nation has not experienced since the 2006 competition.
Be that as it may, it makes sense to rest some players since Nigeria has already qualified. There are still a lot of quality still sitting on the bench and others have not given enough playing time to express themselves in the tournament.
Captain Ahmed Musa
Ahmed Musa may be a little out of form but there's no denying his quality and what he can bring to a game. Another perfect replacement for Moses Simon because of his pacy and unrelenting incursion into the eighteen yard box.
Many fans has questioned why eguavoen hasn't called him in to play even though he is the real Captain of the team. While this is opportunity for eguavoen to give his captain a few last games before he eventually retires.- Musa has already said he would be retiring after the nation's cup.
Frank Onyeka
Having seen Wilfred Ndidi play every minute of every game so far, Onyeka could make his Afcon bow against Guinea-Bissau.
The Brentford midfield man has had to watch on from the bench in wins over Egypt and Sudan, but ought to get significant minutes in this West African derby on Wednesday.
Kelechi Nwakali
Following cameo appearances in the opening couple of games at the finals, the Huesca man may be handed his first start in round three.
Nwakali’s passing range caught the eye in the 3-1 win over Sudan last time out and he could replace Joe Aribo in the XI.
Chidera Ejuke
Moses Simon has been impressive at Afcon but, in Ejuke, Eguavoen theoretically has a competent replacement.
The CSKA Moscow attacker’s direct running and aggressive ball carrying mean Simon can be given a breather in preparation for the Round of 16.
Ejuke got no game time last time out, so it makes sense to play him from the off on Wednesday.
Alex Iwobi
The much-maligned Everton man replaced Samuel Chukwueze at half-time on Saturday and gave a decent account of himself.
Iwobi will hope that 45-minute showing has convinced Eguavoen to hand him his first start against Guinea-Bissau.
With the right-wing berth possibly up for grabs, the former Arsenal man will look to make the desired impact.
Umar Sadiq
There has been an inclination to give the Almeria frontman stick in his two cameos, which has felt incredibly harsh.
Sadiq has played a combined 26 minutes at the finals — making his Nigeria and Afcon debut in the Egypt win before an eight-minute appearance last time out — and any criticism of his ability feels rather strange.
Eguavoen usually bring him in to change formation from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 and has always played as a lone striker up front. Perhaps, he may let play with a support striker this time around.
These likely the six changes Eguavoen may want to make from the starting lineup. Maybe later, depending on how the game progresses. There are still Henry Onyekuru, Olayinka, Ndah that could be given a chance to debut in the tournament
