Big Brother Naija vs UEFA Champions League - Which is the Most Watched Show in Nigeria Today

The Big Brother Naija show has gathered a lot of popularity and viewership over the past few years and  here we want to find out if it has actually stolen the show from UEFA Champions league, as the most watch program in Nigeria.

The show has come with mixed reactions. Many persons believe it is a show that promotes immorality and just waste of time; while another group of persons believe that it is a premium entertainment for the modern day people.

There are several angles to the ensuing arguments, while BBNaija is mostly watched in smaller group of between 2 to 10 persons, UCL is watched mostly in viewing centers and sport bars in a group of 10 to 100 persons gathered to view one screen.

On the other hand, BBN is unofficially banned in about 35% households in Nigeria, while ladies and young teenagers secretly watch the show in other smaller screen devices like DStv combo, smartphones and tabs... These means that the data available maybe misleading as most of the figures maybe mere estimates.

Another area to consider is the viewership spread. BBN viewership clustered in only about 20 major cities in Nigeria, while UCL viewership has penetrated into the remotest rural areas in Nigeria. This is to claim that football is engrained in the Nigerian culture and generally accepted as a form of entertainment by all religion, tribe and families.

But the point is, football largely interest male gender and only less than 10% female population follow and watch UCL in Nigeria. Moreover, Ladies in general and the Gen Z (10 - 25 years) part of the population would rather watch BBN than UCL.

Beyond the growing popularity and fans of the BBN show, the fan base of football viewers is still very large. Not only youths support football clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and the likes, but has become a family tradition in some homes. UCL is watched as a family stable entertainment.

However, there are figures that may blow your mind, BBN Lockdown edition in 2020 recorded 900million votes in 71 days period of the entire show, while UCL finals alone recorded an estimated 34million viewers in Nigeria, same year 2020.

The Question is, Which will you prefer to watch,  Is it the eviction event of the Big Brother Naija show or the final of the UEFA Champions League final?
