NFF to Hire A Foreign Technical Adviser with Immediate Effect
Believe me, it has always been in the plan of NFF to hire a foreign coach, but could not immediately do that because of the clamour for an indigenous coach. This maybe the reason they chose the least qualified among the candidates that applied for the Super Eagles job. Well, this is my opinion.
Now Finidi has paved the way and given NFF the reason to carry out their original plan and nobody can go against this decision, not even the ex-intenationals...
Following the poor performance of the Super Eagles at the ongoing World Cup 2026 qualifiers, the Nigeria Football Federation has announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser for the national team.
This decision is coming at the back drop of poor technical input by Coach Finidi George whose team managed to get only a point in the first two games they played after his appointment as the Eagles gaffer.
This decision was revealed in a communique issued by the football house and made available by the communication Director, Ademola Olajire.
Though, the NFF insists that Finidi George has a contract with the football house, our correspondence gathered that the coming of a foreign Technical Adviser means that Finidi George will be relegated to the position of an assistant, though he retains the title of Chief Coach.
The Communique states: “The Executive Committee of the NFF has resolved to employ a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
The decision may not be unconnected with the Super Eagles poor run of form in the recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bafana Bafana of South Africa and Cheetahs of Benin Republic which saw the Eagles garner just one point from possible six points pushing them down the Group C ladder behind Rwanda, South Africa, Benin republic and Lesotho.
When the draws for the qualifiers were made and the Super Eagles pitched against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Benin, and Rwanda, it seemed like it would be an easy ride for the three-time African champions but the reverse became the case.
Of the four games that Nigeria have played, they have picked just three points, drawing against Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Lesotho, and losing to Benin.
The first two results were during Jose Peseiro’s time as Nigeria coach, while the recent two were with Finidi George as Coach.
Finidi was only appointed as Super Eagles coach in April, and he was expected to produce good results despite his lack of experience in handling a big job. Unfortunately, for him, the results did not go his way, as Nigeria drew 1-1 with South Africa, and lost to Benin.
Following the results, the NFF held and emergency meeting with the Sports Minister Owan Enoh in Abuja Thursday , where the decision to hire a foreign Technical Adviser was taken.
“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football, we can’t run away from that. But we are working tirelessly in conjunction with the Minister to see that we come out with some holistic measures that will change the face of the entire system so that we can move forward,” said NFF President
“Qualifying for the World Cup is still possible, and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the end and Nigeria are going to qualify for the World Cup.
“Very soon, you’re going to see the major steps that the NFF will come out with. And by the grace of God, those major steps will lead us to qualify for the World Cup”, Gusua stated.
