SUPER FALCONS GO ON ‘REDEMPTION MISSION’ – Target to Win African Women Championship in Namibia (See AWC Fixtures and Nigeria team list)

African Women Championship (AWC) starts this weekend, from October 11 – 25 in Windoek Namibia. Super Falcons of Nigeria have placed  alongside host Namibia, Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia in Group A.

But for the unpredictable nature of football, I would have concluded that Super Falcons has already won the AWC even before kicking the first ball in the tournament.

May be, you are not sure what to expect from this Nigerian squad, wait until you see their first match against Cote d’Ivoire, then you’ll have no choice but to bow to their superior fire power.

Watch out of these ladies! I think this is the most balance squad Nigeria has ever assembled – a blend of experience and some young tenacious ladies. Most of them from the renowned River Angels. I can beat my chest and boast that this team can beat most men’s national teams in Africa, and I am not exerggerating.

The Coach, Edwin Okon, decided to selected a crack squad this time around. “There’s no surprises!” he said, “We are ready to contain such fluke like the one Equatorial Guinea displayed at the last edition.”

You may recall that Equatorial Guinea won the last edition, but the ladies promise to redeem the country’s image in Namibia.

Okon named 11 players from the local side , Rivers Angels, which included the top scorer and most valuable player at the last FIFA u-20 womwn World cup in Canada, Asisat Oshoala.

He also included 6 foreign based stars: four times Africa footballer of the year, Perpetua Nkwocha, then Esther Sunday, Francisca ordega, Osinachi Ohale, Josephine Chukwuonye and Onome Ebi.

This squad is on ‘redemption mission!’ “The target isn’t just to qualify for FIFA World cup in Canada next year, but to win AWC and regain our 1^st place in Africa.” Okon explained.

Nigeria has won the title six times since the inception, only loosing it twicein 2006 and 2012.
