Late Rasheed Yekini was better known for his
extraordinary goal scoring ability. Till date his record remain as the highest
goal Scorer for Nigeria national team - scored 37 goals in 84 caps.
Looking at his record, Yekini was the first
Nigerian to ever score a world cup goal at USA'94. He won the highest goal
scorer award for every single league he played in Nigeria (3sc), Ivory Coast (Africa
Sports National) and Portugal (Vitoria Setubal). He went on to win the Africa
footballer of the Yeara1994. So it is appropriate for LMC
to honor him and try to immortalize his name along this reckoning.
To ensure that the award isn't just another
handshake, but prestigious one, players will be looking forward to, Rasheed Yekini
Foundation has decided to be doling out N100, 000 to the award winner for each
season; alongside Silverware worth N50, 000. With hope to increase the prize money to about half
a million Naira in the next 5years.
Indeed, this is a gesture to encourage players
and to make goal scoring in the league more competitive. As we all know,
scoring goal is the single most important high point in every football game.
At the inaugural presentation of the award, at
the close of the on-going Premier league season in Nigeria, the foundation plan
to fly in Rasheed Yekini's only daughter from London to hand over the award to
the eventual winner.
Meanwhile, Heartland striker, Bright Ejike and
Sunshine Star, Tunde Adeniji are currently leading the goal scoring chat with
11 goals each, after the close of first
round. Following the improved quality of the league this season, are we likely
to see any player go near the all time record of 23 goals, set by Enyimba's Mfon Udoh last season? Well,
you never can tell what will happen during the second round.
