Akwa United Federation Cup Victory Brings Africa to the Nest Of Champions, Light up the City of Uyo
When Akwa Ibom International Stadium was named ‘The
Nest of Champions,’ scorners wondered where the champions would come from.
Since the creation of the state, no team from Akwa Ibom had ever won a major
national competition, least to say. Indeed, there isn’t any assurance that the
stadium would continue to host national team matches.
Some sport analysts, in their commentaries, have
noted that one of the major challenges this probably most beautiful stadium in
Nigeria will be facing is under utilization.
So you can now understand why Akwa United, champions
of the 70th edition of the Federations cup, brought a major victory
to both the government and people of Akwa Ibom state. No longer will skeptics
call the stadium a white Elephant monument without any economic value.
Akwa United has brought the vision of the past
governor, Godswill Akpabio, to bear and truly justified the huge investment he
made in not just building an ultra modern stadium, but a magnificent sport
city. The city of Uyo is such a beauty to behold in Nigeria.
Akwa Ibom state sports commission with pride is
already asking to host the Super Cup next year. So premier league champions,
Enyimba international and their own Akwa United, the federations cup champions,
will trade tackles at the nest of champions in January 2016 or so.
Akwa United winning the Federation cup means Uyo
will be hosting part of the continental tournament – CAF Cup. As the chairman
of the team, Nse Ubeh stated, “Hosting teams from several African countries in
the city of Uyo, at the Nest of Champions, will bring such an unforgettable experience
to the visitors and great brand image for Nigeria.”
“We’re going to deliver something different in 2016.
We’re set to make Vincent Enyeama our Football Ambassador and bring back great
natives like Mfon Udoh, Eduok Emem and other players on loan in other clubs. We
need all their support to compliment the effort of the boys on ground.” Ubeh
declared.
Meanwhile, let the celebration continue. Akwa United
deserve all the pump and pageantries that follows great victories such as this.
And talking about the reward for success, team captain Otoubong Akpan expressed
so much appreciation: “We’re so happy to have won this; it is just the
beginning of better things to come. More so as our present governor, Utom
Emmanuel and Senator Godswill Akpabio,
former governor, have promised to give
their full support to the club and also
help us find some corporate sponsors. I can sense it, this is just the beginning for us.
