Why Is Young African Footballers Heading to Guatemala? [The Secrets You Should Know]

Guate - what?
Never heard of Guatemala play any kind of serious football, so why are Nigerians and other West African players heading to Guatemala?

Yeah, football is the most popular sports in this Central American country, but nothing to write home about

Guatemala is placed 130 in the current Fifa Coca-Cola rankings and a member of the CONCACAF. Guatemala's elite football league "Mayor Liga A"  also known as Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala have only 12 teams competing in a very sparse fixtures that run for less than six months duration.

Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin American region, doesn't have that kind of money to pay footballers. Although, their currency have appreciable value (1 US Dollar is worth approximately 8 Guatemalan Quetzal). And some of the top clubs pay an average 2000 Quetza per month (about 300 US Dollars)

I recently read an article online, while trying to find out why African footballers are en route to Guatemala. The article is titled: "Be Thankful You Are Not A Guatemalan Soccer Player"

The article stated and I quote:
"Professional soccer players are well-paid and have perfect lives right?

Not in Guatemala!

One of Guatemala’s professional clubs, Coatepeque, reportedly didn’t pay its players for almost three months. Also, the official soccer governing body of Guatemala appears to be refusing to recognize the Guatemalan Players Association as an actual union.

This has sparked protests from Guatemalan players. Players from Guatemala’s top two teams, Municipal and Comunicaciones, are boycotting the Guatemala National Team until the situation is rectified."

So, Guatemalan clubs doesn't pay well at all and yet they owe their players for several months - that's not a place to be, if you ask me.

Moreover, the streets of Guatemala are very dangerous with pick pockets, bag snatchers... you could easily lose your money and luggage, and become scandaled.

So Why Are African Players Heading to Guatemala?

The thing is,
1. It is visa free for most West Africans traveling to Guatemalala.
2. Outside playing football, it is more easy to find a job in Guatemala, the unemployment rate is just 2.16%. (You can easily get residents and Work permit without much hassles).
3. You can easily nationalize and get issued with a Guatemala Passport.
4. With a Guatemalan Passport you can travel visa free to USA, Canada and most Europe Schengen countries.
5. The rest are top secret!
