2021 Ranking: Top10 Nigerian Strikers Banging In Goals This Season

 

Ranking strikers is pretty straight forward. The job of a center forward is to score goals QED and no matter how you play, how many balls you put behind the net rank you for the season. 

Quiet a number of Nigerian strikers are firing from all cylinders around the world. This figures here is very impressive for four top Nigerian strikers this season.

Nigeria national team qualified for Cameroon 2022 Afcon in a grand style, with a match to spare in group L. . 

Victor Osimhen became the highest goal scorer in the African qualifiers with 5 goals. And Paul Onuachu who initially struggled to score went on to net two goals in the last two qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho. 

As Nigeria prepare to commence Fifa world Cup qualifiers in May 2021, let us look at the top ten Nigerian strikers that should be called up for the national assignments. 

Ranked Number 10 - Cyriel Dessers: has scored 4 goals and 1 assist in 28 appearances for KFC Genks in the Belgium 1st division league. 

The 26years who opted to play for Nigeria and has capped two times for the Super Eagles, have had less playing time as a second fiddle to fellow compatriot Paul Onuachu. He usually come in as a late substitute in most matches, but his quality isn't in doubt.

 Recently he put up a stunning performance, scoring 5 goals in a single friendly game he started for his club. 

Ranked Number 9 - Henry Onyekuru: returned to Galatasaray on loan from Monaco and has scored 5 goals and 3 assists in 18 appearances for Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Liga this season. 

The 23years old is gradually returning to such splendid form that we saw of him in 2018/19 season. His display of dutiful skills during the match between Nigeria and Lesotho gave credence to the fact that he made impact even though he was introduced in the 73 minute of the second half. 

Ranked 8 - Taiwo Awoniyi:  has taken his game to another level this season, scoring 5 goals and 2 assists in 19 appearances for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

The 23 years has always been on loan from Liverpool, but with the kind of impact he is making in Berlin, I will not be surprised if Jurgen Klopp call him to join the Premiership side next season. 

Ranked Number 7 - Anthony Nwakaeme: is one of the great strikers Nigerians didn't get to celebrate as they should, but who has won the golden boot three times in Israel Premier league and twice in the Turkish Super liga. 

The ageless center forward, now 32 years old, has scored 6 goals and 7 assist in 22 appearances for his club Trabzonspor. 

Although, because of his age, I don't think he will be considered again to play for the Super Eagles. But that doesn't in anyway undermine the fact that he is still one of the strikers firing from all cylinders and making a lot of impact for his club. 

Ranked Number 6 - Victor Osimhen: is one of Nigeria's new generation golden boy, regarded by fans as the best striker ever to emerge since the demise of Rasheed Yekini.

Osimhen scored 5 goals and 2 assists in 17 appearances after he signed an €84 million deal for SSC Napoli,. Not what many fans expected, but the season for the 22years sharp shooter has been slowed down by injury, health and covid cases. . 

However, Osimhen remain the first choice striker for Nigeria national team despite the splendid performances from the likes of Paul Onuachu and Simy Nwankwo. 

Ranked Number 5 - Kelechi Iheanacho: is perhaps the real golden boy of this new generation football players from Nigeria.

Iheanacho's new found form has brought to fore the kind of quality he is made of. The 24 years striker recently scored a hat trick and two brace to make up for the 8 goals he has scored in 18 appearances for Leicester City. 

His splendid form has brought about his contract extension with the Premier League contenders. 

Ranked Number 4 -Terem Moffi: is the newest discovery this season. Though, yet to be called up to any level of the Nigeria national team, but his maiden feature in the French Ligue1, scoring11 goals and  3 assists in 27 appearances for Lorient is a real revelation.

The 21years striker is not a fluke with the kind of quality he displays and of course his unknown records show he scored 20 goals in 27 appearances for  Riteriai in a Lithuanian league and was drafted on loan to KV Kortrijk in the Belgian league where he scored 5 goals in 9 appearances in 2018/20 season. 

Ranked Number 3 - Umar Sadiq: came to reckon when he helped Nigeria national team to a bronze medal in 2016 Olympic games in Brazil. Sadiq had struggled with the Italian style of play while in the Serial A with SC Roma.

But the African Ostrich, as he is called, has raised his head again firing from all cylinder as he came to Spanish Segunda scoring 15 goals and 5 assists in 30 appearances for UD Almeria. Sadiq is in splendid form and rumours has it that he may be moving to Atletico Madrid next season. 

Ranked Number 2 - Simeon ( Simy) Nwankwo: is setting his own record at the Italian serial A this season. He has been very imposing scoring in every game in  the last ten fixtures leading the goal chat among the top five European leagues. 

Simy, as he is popularly called, has scored 17 goals in 31 appearances for Crotone attracting many suitors for the upcoming summer transfer season. 

The 28 years striker is not new to the Nigeria national team as he made it to 2018 FIFA World cup in Russia at the expense of dropping Kelechi Iheanacho at the dying minutes.

Ranked Number 1 - Paul Onuachu: has been amazing breaking his own records as one of Europe's top scorers this season.

The 26 years has scored 29 goals in 33 appearances for KFC Genk, and with the way he is going, he may even score more before the close of the season. 

He has scored in the last 23 fixtures and it seems unstoppable as a predator in the eighteen yard box in every game. 

You cannot just ignore Ebere after he was called up thrice as an alternate player in the recent fixtures of  Nigeria national team. He finally found form scoring two goals in last two fixtures. 

Onuachu has become the most beautiful bride for some European clubs like AC Milan, PSG, Tottenham Hotspur...
