A Snoop At Liberia National Team - Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers with Super Eagles [Everything you Need to Know about the Lone Stars]

It's not enough to wave aside the Lone Stars of Liberia. We do not want any surprises during the World Cup qualifiers, so we decided to snoop at the current Liberia national team squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers fixtures with Super Eagles of Nigeria in Lagos this September 2021. Thanks to Bush Chicken (www.bushchicken.com) that revealed a lot to our us.

To qualify for the second round of the World Cup qualifiers, Liberia defeated Sierra Leone 3 - 1 at the Samuel Doe Stadium Monrovia and drew 1 - 1 in Freetown. The same Sierra Leonean  team Nigeria couldn't defeat home and away in the Afcon qualifiers; may have given the Lone Stars a glimpse of hope that they can actually shoot down the Super Eagles.

And their head tactician, Peter Butler has been telling his boys that the Nigeria National team is in no way invincible; Sierra Leone totally broke down the squad and from 4 - 0 lead, they forced Nigeria to a 4 - 4 draw right on their home soil.

How the Leone Stars Are Likely to Play in Lagos

While most national teams would plan to get an away draw, Butler is planning to press the push button and go for the broke in Lagos come September. Let me spell it out, "the Lone stars want to defeat Super Eagles in Lagos!" That'll give them an edge if they defeat Nigeria at home and more confidence to face their more tricky fixtures with Cape Verde.

Peter Butler Football Philosophy

Butler love playing attacking and free flowing/entertaining football style, whether he is playing home or away, he would rather play a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation, using three attackers led by PKNS FC, Kpah Sherman, Golden Boot winner and best foreign player in Malaysia 2019/20. Then, South African-based Terrence Tisdell and Sam Johnson, who plays for Real Salt Lake City in the American Major League Soccer. They also have the team captain William Jebor, the top scorer on the team since the end of the George Weah era, with 12 goals in 16 games.

As much as pundits usually argue that ‘possession in football don’t win you any silverware’, the Lone stars has gradually been able to play ‘nice’ football since Butler took over as coach in 2019. A football philosophy he refers to as "Carpet football." A strong midfield play, toasting the ball around and always pushing forward, forcing opponents to retreat to defend their territory most of the time.

Butler has raise some ball jugglers in the middle, led by Seth Hellberg of FC Sheriff Moldova,  Allen Njie and Murphy Dorley. And if these midfielders catch the opponent defense flat footed or slow in reaction then be sure of goal reign.

Butler has also built a somewhat organized defences line that doesn't easily concede goals. The defense pairing of Teah Dennis and Alvin Maccornel are solid in the central defence while their world Cup hero, Ashley Williams would normally be in  goal as first choice goal keeper. Joel Johnson at the right back and Gasimu Kouyateh from third division side Pags FC would usually be at the left-back role.

On paper, players of the Lone stars couldn't be compared to the high profile stars in the Nigerian squad, but their team work and playing often more regular, make the Lone stars a more rounded team. Believe me, if they catch Super Eagles napping, they are capable of inflicting damage here in Lagos.
