WAFCON 2026: Madugu Targets 11th Title and World Cup Glory for Super Falcons

As the continent’s most decorated women’s football team, the Super Falcons of Nigeria are heading to Morocco with a familiar ambition: continental dominance. Head coach Justine Madugu has made his mission clear, setting his sights on a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. However, for a team of Nigeria's pedigree, the 2026 edition—which kicks off on July 26—offers more than just silverware; it is the critical gateway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Double Objective

For Coach Madugu, the tournament is a two-fold mission. "The next WAFCON will also serve as qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, so our priority will first be to ensure that we make it to the World Cup," Madugu recently stated. Under the new qualification structure, the four quarter-final winners will secure automatic passage to the global stage, while those eliminated in the quarter-finals will enter a play-off pathway. Securing an 11th title remains the ultimate dream, but cementing a spot in Brazil is the immediate strategic necessity.

A Team of Continuity and Resilience

Since their triumph at the 2024 edition, the Super Falcons have undergone a period of tactical consolidation. Under Madugu, the team has been praised for fostering a more united and disciplined environment. The current setup focuses heavily on team cohesion and tactical flexibility—traits that were instrumental in overcoming the logistical hurdles and high-pressure moments of their last title-winning campaign.

The "nomenclature" of the team remains anchored by experienced leaders and world-class talents who have become household names. The core includes pillars like goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, midfield general Rasheedat Ajibade, and offensive threats Asisat Oshoala, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Uchenna Kanu. This blend of veteran experience and international exposure continues to be the backbone of the squad.

The Return of Esther Okoronkwo

One of the most significant updates for the fans is the return of forward **Esther Okoronkwo**. After being sidelined for nearly two months due to a meniscus tear sustained while playing for AFC Toronto, the star forward has made a successful return to action. Her comeback, marked by a 25-minute appearance in a recent 3-1 league victory, is a massive boost for Madugu’s offensive options.

Okoronkwo was a revelation at the last WAFCON, contributing two goals and six assists in six appearances. Her presence provides the kind of creative spark and clinical edge that will be vital as Nigeria navigates a challenging Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt.

Preparing for the 16-Team Era

The 2026 tournament marks a historic shift as the competition expands to 16 teams. This expansion, while creating a more competitive landscape across Africa, also tests the depth of every squad. For the Super Falcons, the buildup has included high-stakes friendly matches, such as their recent preparation against Senegal, designed to iron out tactical wrinkles and ensure every player is match-ready for the intensity of the group stages.

As they prepare to open their campaign against tournament debutants Malawi in Rabat, the message from the camp is one of focused determination. With the perfect balance of returning stars like Okoronkwo and an established core of winners, the Super Falcons are once again positioned as the team to beat in Morocco.
