NIGERIA'S FLAMINGOS PROMISE FANS MANY MORE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS - As The Team Progresses in FIFA Under 17 Women's World Cup
It takes a little
bit more than just passion to stay awake by 3 am GMT+ to see a game like Nigeria
Vs Colombia in a FIFA Under 17 Women's World Cup. Not when you have even been exhausted
by a UEFA Champions league game last night.
Gush! I didn't
envy myself at all. It was really a fight between slumber eyes and how to stay awake
as I watch the game on TV. It was the spirit of patriotism that kept urging me through
out the drab game. My friend Eric Enyinna asked me, "Who send you?" "I'll
rather watch the play back at own convenience." he concluded.
The time difference
between Nigeria and Costa Rica, where the women's world cup is currently going on,
hasn't helped matters at all for fans who want to cheer on the Flamingos. Do they
have a choice, since the Nigerian ladies are somehow grinding out results and had
already qualified for the quarter finals along side Mexico, in just two games.

Though, most Nigerians are yet to be convinced by this Flamingos, and many may not want to loose their sleep because of the team. Having gone past China in its first group game, while Colombia fell by 4 - 0 against Mexico, Nigerians expected that Colombia wouldn't be much of a problem, but the South American Ladies made life difficult for the Flamingos. It was by sheer luck that they got the 2 - 1 victory.
Nevertheless,
Nigerians would still want to know who tops the group. And the last group game against
Mexico is like a copper test for the Flamingos and fans would want to see how the
team match up with the North American side.
Indeed, while
Nigeria struggled to grind out a 2 - 1 win over China and Colombia respectively,
Mexico pipped both teams 4 - 0 to showcase its superior goal scoring prowess over
Nigeria.
Come to think
of it, it would be a great opportunity for the Mexicans to revenge Nigeria's Golden
Eaglets defeat in FIFA Under 17 Men's world cup in UAE 2013.
Beyond the rivalry,
both teams would also want to avoid the high flying Japanese women who pumped goals
into the Paraguay Goal post as if it where a game of basketball: 10 - 0! It's better
Nigeria meet them at the finals or what do you think?
But one thing
going for the Nigerians is the confidence they display. The team believe it could
go all the way to win the trophy this time around and the players are improving
by every game they play.
The lady
that scored the winning goals against both China and Colombia, Uche Kanu, said “I
understand Nigerians watch our games very early in the morning. I am sorry, but
we are happy they are keeping vigil with us and we encourage them to continue.
It may mean more sleepless nights because we are determined to go all the way
to win the Trophy for our great country.”
