4 Favorites to Win 2015 African Cup of Nations | What About the Dark Horses?

With Nigeria Out of the way, because its national team was knocked out at the qualifiers and won’t be defending the trophy they won in 2013; gives opportunity for a new Champion to emerge. So which country will go all the way to win the coveted trophy in Equatorial Guinea?

Well, it will be a great miracle if the host Equatorial Guinea wins. The team only got into the tournament when it became host, that’s after Morocco was stripped of the hosting right. Here, I will share with you 4 teams that are favorites to win 2015 AFCON.

  1.     Algeria NT: 18th in FIFA World ranking and 1st in Africa. Star Player Yaccini Brahimi, won the BBC African Footballer of the year.

Mathematically, Algeria is favored to win the tournament. We have seen the progress the team has made since 2013. Christian Gourcuff boys were rated the best African team at the 2014 FIFA world cup, where the team was ousted at the round of 16.  El khadra, as are nicknamed, has improved a lot since 2014.

 2.  Cote D’Lvoire NT: 28th in FIFA World ranking and 2nd in Africa. The Ivorian may try to justify why Yaya Toure retained CAF African footballer of the year Award for the 4th time.

Cote d’Ivoire is always favored to win in Africa because of its star studded side with great individual players: Didier Drogba, Gervinho, Kolo Ture,  Wilfred Bony, Solomon Kalu…

Now, they have a very experienced coach in the African terrain,Herve Renard, who won the 2011 edition of the tournament with Zambia.

Equatorial Guinea presents Cote d'Ivoire probably the last chance to win during its golden era of top flight players.

3. Ghana NT: 37th in FIFA world ranking and 4th in Africa. Ghana still maintain the reputation as the only team world champions, Germany couldn’t beat at the 2014 FIFA World cup.

Star players like: Asaomah Gyan, Andre Ayew, Micheal Essien, Sulley Muntari… are still around. Now with a world class coach Avram Grant – former Chelsea manager. The black stars is favored to win in Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana NT is perhaps the most compact team with very skillful players at the middle and sharp strike force. Watch out for this team.
