Nigerian football fans got as excited as the news broke out late yesterday that Taiwo Awoniyi has put pen on paper.
The 18 years old Nigerian youth international
signed a £400, 000 deal with Liverpool fc, but will immediately head out on
loan to a German second division side, PSV Frankfurt. Probably, because of the
eligibility clause for obtaining British work permit.
Awoniyi who previously played for Imperial
Football Academy Lagos, may have entered a pre-contract agreement with Kalmar
fc.
The Swedish team believes the Nigerian
youngster will join their team after he turned 18, but FIFA had to step in and annul that agreement;
in other to prevent trafficking of players from across the globe to European
clubs. The football governing body insisted that Awoniyi wasn't of age then and
therefore, not eligible to enter such agreement.
During the unveiling, Awoniyi said:“This is the
biggest club in the world and I’m privileged to be here. I’ll try to develop
myself very well so that when I come back to Liverpool I’ll be able to add
value to the team. When I’m in the red shirt, I will always give my very best
to make the fans happy."
Most of the fans we spoke to in Lagos Nigeria
said that the signing was a good advancement for the player, who has been in
splendid form for Nigerian age grade national teams this year 2015.
Awoniyi is more in Nigeria Under-23 team. He
played for the victorious Golden Eaglets at the Under-17 world cup in 2013 and
the Flying Eagles at the last Under‑20 World Cup. He has also earned a call-up for the senior Nigeria team, Super Eagles
