FIFA President to Revamp Controversial Proposal for - Annual Club World Cup
Fifa president Gianni Infantino has submitted a controversial proposal for an annual Club World Cup featuring top club sides from Europe and the rest of the world.
The Fifa president is returning to his masterplan to reconfigure club and national team competitions, having shelved the idea earlier this year in the face of opposition from Uefa and the European Club Association.
At the time he said he had investors who were prepared to pay $12bn (€12.5bn) for four Club World Cup tournaments every four years from 2021 but the proposals were never voted on, with Fifa promising to conduct further consultation.
The Guardian reports that the Fifa Council will now be presented with a new blueprint when it meets in Rwanda this Friday which includes two different proposals for the club tournament.
The most controversial scheme is understood to include an option for a new Club World Cup to take place every season in July and August or to hold it in a different time slot during the season.
A second option is understood to propose a quadrennial tournament but to increase the number of teams taking part to more than the 16 or 24 proposed by Infantino in May.
Uefa told The Guardian that it continued to be opposed to Infantino’s plans, which would represent a direct challenge to the Uefa Champions league.
