Adekunle Gold Drive Around Lagos Selling European Clubs Jersey In His Van, Make N150k Daily
Learn How to Run A Mobile Sportswear Boutique In Nigeria
Maybe, you have seen him yourself or even bought from him at Computer Village Ikeja, Akpomgbo Lagos Island, Aspanda Trade fair Ojo or even Alaba international Market... Adekunle Olusola popularly called Adekunle Gold by his customers, run a mobile sports boutique with his Chervolet B100 Van

Oh well, don't mistake him for the popular musician Adekunle Gold. Well, Olusola is also a popular merchant who trades on European clubs jersey. He said he sells more driving to where his active customers clusters daily.

The Market Dynamics
"The mistake most traders in this business make is they locate their shops in or near a stadium, since that is where sports people cluster daily, but I found out it isn't so. Many of these sports people hardly buy, they cannot afford to pay the price tag for an original European club jersey, they would rather purchase a cheap replica one for their training."

"I found out fans wear Original European club jersey more as a casual fashion than for playing football. They buy the sportswear to show off their support or affinity with their favorite european club."

"I found out it is the working class and the business people that can afford to buy original Jersey with price ranging between N7k and N10k."

"They are the active fans who argue with one another from their shops in the market. This segment of football consumers may find it difficult to leave their shop just to go to buy jersey at the stadium or at Oluwole market, so I decided to buy a bus and bring the goods right there in front of their shops at Computer village, Aspanda Trade fair, Akpomgbo market..."

"Moreover, there are lots of latent demands, people who will never buy a Jersey on their own, unless they see it displayed in front of their shop, and they see their friends and fellow business men buying, then they go ahead to order for themself too."

"The dynamics of the trade is to know which market to go each day. I also drive to places like  Lagos city mall Lagos Island, ThePalms Lekki, Shoprite Lekki...sometime, I go to Agege Stadium when MFM is playing a league match or during Federations cup matches... and I go armed myself with my business card."

"I know passerbys who may not be ready to buy immediately, will want to take my contact. Sometimes, they call me on phone and I go to deliver to them at their homes or offices."

Understanding the Demand Dynamics
"Another thing that's so important you must understand is the currently demand, which is based on the dynamics of what's happening in the various top flight European leagues: PL, Laliga, Bundesliga, Seria A and Ligue 1."

"The traditional teams with large fan base in Nigeria are Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Barcelona... When any of these traditional teams are doing well in their local League and or Uefa Champions league, the demand for their jersey become so high and I sell more."

"When teams that has a player of Nigerian -or African descend begin to do well, the demand for their jersey also go up high too. Teams like liecester city where Nigeria's Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho id currently playing; then  Liverpool jersey is hot in the market now, because the team is doing well and has African Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah."

"In other words, teams that has shown a kind of apathy to Nigerians or African players, teams like Manchester city, Real Madrid, PSG... may not sell much, even when the team is doing so well. Fans may support them temporary but will not go to the extent of buying their jersey or showing any kind of affinity.. You must understand these dynamics and always follow the trend."

How to Source the product:
"I do not source the jersey from the UK, it will be too expensive converting in Pounds sterling. The thing is, most clubs and licensees like Nike, Adidas, Puma... go to Hong kong or China to manufacture the products. So I source direct from the manufacturers in  Hong Kong."

"I order online and they load them in cartons and take care of the shipping. There are agents that handle the shipping and clearing the goods. I go to their office to pick up the consignment in Lagos Island. Sometimes, I travel to Hong kong myself to make other arrangements."

"Another little thing you should know is the sizes that sells more: L and XL are in more demand than S, M or XXL, XXXL. So I usually order more L and XL."

Operational Cost (Running cost]
"The initial capital outlay to start the business is about N5million: I bought a used (tokumbo) bus N2 million and constructed shelves inside the bus. I ordered goods of N2.5 million for a start.

My overhead cost is quite lower than running a brick and mortar shop. Expenses like rent and crazy electricity bills or excise taxes are avoided.

Fueling,, servcing and repairs of the bus, then you pay agbaro (local tax collectors) anywhere you pack your bus to sell.

Revenue And Profit
When I had a shop at Oluwole Market Lagos Island, I use to make an average of N30k per day. But now that I have transform my business into a mobile sports boutique, I make an average of N150k per day. That's about five times what I usually make before.

My net profit after overhead cost, taxes and other deductions has also increased by over 100%. I think it is a better way to hustle, you can't just sit at one place in Oluwole market, among many competitors, hoping enough customers will buy from you each day. You just have to reach out to them and make it easier for them to make buying decisions.
