Joseph Yobo Vs Gernot Rohr - Who Should Lead Super Eagles to 2022 World Cup in Qatar
The big debate that broke out early this week, stirred by the article of ex- ininternational Segun Odegbami, in Complete Sports newspapers of Saturday January 11, 2020, declaring that ex-Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has what it takes to lead the Nigeria national team to the 2022 Fifa World Cup scheduled to hold in Qatar.
Odegbami proposed in his weekly column that ‘Yobo, after two years of providing him the necessary training and exposure, should become the coach of the Super Eagles to the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022.
The article has been generating great international interest and provoking serious debate and discourse in several media.
Former Nigeria Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdulahi and a British journalist, Satish Sekar have backed Odegbami's proposal
Abdulahi and Sekar agree with Odegbami that Yobo has the technical ability, the exposure, the personality and has displayed excellent character and exemplary leadership.
On the other hand, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is keen to retain the services of the present Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr with negotiations for a new contract, which may keep him in the job till 2022. The contract negotiation is set to commence next week.
Rohr is in the last six months of his current contract and the NFF is willing to give him a new deal, which means the people in the glasshouse are satisfied with his performances so far.
The German tactician led Nigeria to the group stage at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and a bronze medal finish at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. He drew with Ukraine and Brazil in recent international friendly, putting the Super Eagles in the world reckoning once again.
For me, Joseph Yobo is like the Nigerian version of David Beckham of England. Great charisma and such a noble character of royalty... Married to a beautiful model, Adaeze and have his own football club, Yobo fc in the Nigeria nationwide league.
Yeah, Yobo understands the technicality of the game; can read and analyzes the game very well, if you have listened to his analyzes on SuperSports. But I don't know if he is qualified as a coach or if he has handled any major clubside or any age grade national team. So there isn't any basis to compare his coaching ability.
I am not sure Odegbami want NFF to use Super Eagles coaching job to experiment with Yobo's coaching ability...if he can really coach at that level or not.
I would rather recommend Yobo for the NFF presidency job, as Amaju Pinnick is gradually rounding up his second and final tenure as NFF President.
I think Gernot Rohr is handling the plumb job well and has a considerable good relationship with his employers.
Perhaps, NFF is hoping if given more time Rohr may reproduce the kind of result Clemence Westerhof got in 1994. Bringing in Yobo now, will be a distraction and may even jeopardize Super Eagles world cup qualification campaign.
