Esteban Obiang: How the Underdog Became Africa's Dark Horse - Overnight

 


The one goal that made Esteban Obiang so popular, not only in Africa, but across the international community this morning


Nobody knows Esteban Obiang or reckoned with Equatorial Guinea, when it comes to footballing nations in Africa... and it was going to be a walk over for Algeria in their second Group E game, so everybody thought. 


The Desert foxes of Algeria came to that game with a record of 35 games unbeaten run. In fact, since they won the Africa cup of nations 2019, no team has ever beaten them... and they are currently ranked 2nd in Africa, just after Senegal. 


The Algerians came into that match trying to redeem their image, after a goalless draw with another minnows Sierra Leone, in their first group game. But this time, Equatorial Guineas held their own althrough the match. 


Contrary to expectations, In the 70th minute, Esteban met the ball dropping from a corner and striked it inside the net for the only goal of the match. What would become the biggest upset in African football history. 


All Equatorial Guineas went wild in celebration and Immediately, the international media went searching: Who is Esteban Obiang... And by this morning, he became the headline news all across the world. 


Who is Esteban Obiang? 



 Obiang Obono, commonly known as Esteban Obiang or simply Esteban, is a professional footballer who plays as a right back for Segunda División RFEF club Antequera CF. .Born in Spain 7th of May 1998.


He registered in the Spanish football competitions with the surnames Orozco Fernández, from his Spanish adoptive parents, instead of his original ones, Obiang Obono. He has played for several lower league teams: Utterance FC, Betis B team, Ibiza before Antequera CF. 


Esteban was born in Zaragoza. His biological mother died from complications during his birth. Then, his grandmother and his aunt took care of him. When he was only 22 months old, he was adopted by a Spanish family from Utrera, where he would spend most of his life. He considers himself as a person from Utrera, only called up to play for his fatherland. 


Esteban made his international debut for Equatorial Guinea on 9 October 2017, in a 3–1 victory over Mauritius in a friendly match. He came on as a second half substitute for Diosdado Mbele.


 On 16 January 2022, he help his national team to defeat Algeria during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations by scoring the lone goal of the match.
