Prudential Africa Insuring Your Lifestyle - Proud Sponsors of AFCON 2021

Life insurance company Prudential Africa has confirmed its status as the official insurance partner of the Africa Cup of Nations, currently being played in the host nation Cameroon.

The tournament kicked off on January 9 with Prudential featuring on in-stadium LED boards from the first game between Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

Country partners in Kenya, Uganda and Ghana also tweeted that “Prudential is proud to be the official insurance partner for AFCON 2021” as the tournament got underway on Sunday.

At a press conference for the official announcement this morning, Eric Mboma, chief representative officer, Prudential Northern Africa Region, said the sponsorship underscored Prudential’s commitment to the African continent.

“As we grow our business in Africa, we also want to support the passion and talent of its people. Africans share a common love for football and we are honoured to be part of a tournament that unites the continent and brings together the brightest talents of African football,” he said.

Mboma added: “Through sports, Prudential wants to encourage people to stay active and lead more healthy lifestyles. As a life insurer, we believe that health and wellness are important for people to live fulfilling lives.”

Prudential joins a pool of Afcon sponsors headlined by title partner TotalEnergies. Other official sponsors include Binance, TikTok, Umbro, 1XBET, Continental, Orange and Visa.

Prudential has life insurance operations in eight countries across Africa: Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Nigeria, supporting its more than 1.7 million customers through a distribution network of more than 600 branches.

In November, the company’s umbrella group Prudential plc moved its Africa regional headquarters from London to Nairobi in Kenya “to provide its businesses across Africa with greater support and to be closer to its customers, partners and distributors on the continent”.

The life insurer sees demand for insurance growing across Africa where the population is expected to double to more than 2 billion by 2050. Africa currently has an insurance penetration rate of 2.7 per cent, while its out-of-pocket spend for healthcare – expenditure where insurance does not cover the full cost of the health-related services – is almost double that of Asia at $6bn (€5.2bn), the company said.
