7 Things Nigeria Football Fans will Spend Money On - Going into 2023

State of Nigeria Football Fan Consumption Trend Report, 2022 -  2023

Nigeria football fans came into 2022 with high expectations and many sport business projections stated that it would be a year consumers would spend the highest in sports/football related goods and services.

There were tournaments and events that were suppose to stir the high consumption rate. African Cup of Nations in January, FIFA World Cup qualification play-off in April, African Women Cup of nations in June and FIFA World Cup proper in November. The fans took it for granted that Super Eagles, the Nigeria men's national team would win the trophy in Cameroon and qualify for the World Cup. And the Super Falcons would win in Morocco and qualify for 2023 Women's World Cup.

The projections were made based on the high consumptions recorded during the last World Cup year in 2018. Example, Nike sold 30 million Super Eagles jerseys designed for the World Cup and Subscription for DStv and GOtv increased by 35% hitting NGN500 million in revenue. So, there was such projections for repeat windfall in 2022.

The emotional downturn when Super Eagles didn't do well at the nations Cup and failed to qualify for the World Cup, affected the projections in no little measure. Added the fact that Super Falcons couldn't retain AWCON. The value of consumption plummeted below what was ever imagined.

Although, DStv/GOtv and other Paytv subscriptions increased by 8%, but nothing close to projected. Fans as usual turn back to UEFA Champions League, Premier League and other top european leagues for entertainment utility.
