Owerri is the native home of Emmanuel Amunike, one time Africa footballer of the year and FC Barcelona star. This sports city has produced skillful players for both the Senior national team and the age group. Name them: Mobi Okparaku, Lawerence Ukaegbu, Chiedo Chukwueke, Stanley Okoro… Most recently, Kelechi Iheanacho, the Most Value Player at 2013 FIFA U16 world cup; and now a Manchester City player.

Most top football stars in Nigeria in the early 90s’ had at one time played for the Nigeria Premiership club side, Iwuanyawu Nationale FC of Owerri, which won the league 6 times and the Federations cup (Challenge cup) 5 times. Players like Austin Okocha, Etim Esin, Andrew Uweh, Sunday Eboigwe, all featured for the Clubside.

Weather:
Owerri is in the rainforest region of Eastern Nigeria. Like most part of the country, it has three weather change: Rainy season, Harmattan season, and Dry season. Lots of thunderstorm rainfall between June to October; then Harmattan cold dry winds from November to January, before dry tropical sun burn between February to May.
