The Group B of African World Cup Qualifiers has
actually turned out to be a two horse race. While Algeria and Cameroon are
totally out of the race, the battle in Uyo between Super Eagles of Nigeria
Versus Chipolopolo of Zambia may just the decider…who will eventually qualify
for Russia 2018.
Head coach of Zambia, Wedson Nyirenda, has expressed his belief
that his team can secure maximum points, when they travel to Nigeria for a 2018
World Cup qualifier in October.
Chipolopolo completed back-to-back
wins over Algeria September, to climb to the second spot with seven points in
Group B.
Nyirenda says the results are pushing them closer to achieving their Russia
2018 dreams.
“We managed to grab the six
points. The team has done very well. We are getting closer to the dream,”
Nyirenda told CAF website.
“The North Africans are not an
easy side but the boys went on and fought for the six points. We will now focus
on Nigeria. They are a good team and will desperately want a win.
“I have a big team that can
pick a win [against Nigeria] and that is what I’m planning for.”
On the other side, Head
coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said that although they are on the
verge of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Zambia will not be a walkover.
Nigeria leads Group B of
the African qualifying series for Russia 2018 with 10 points and will qualify
for the mundial if they draw playing at home against Zambia on October 7.
“We have a very good
chance to qualify but we can’t relax because it’s not guaranteed yet,” Rohr
told Complete sports
“We are happy with where we are but we’re yet to get the ticket,
so we must continue to work hard.
“The Home match in Uyo gives a better opportunity to get the job
done and we will do out best to take that opportunity,”
