Super Eagles Win Losers Final - Breaking AFCON Record In Egypt
Nigeria has become masters in this regard. If there is any special award for the team with most third-place win in the Africa Cup of Nations, the honor would undoubted go to the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Nigeria have played eight losers finals and won it all, after beating the Cataghe Eagles of Tunisia 1 - 0 on Wednesday.
Nigeria first won the third place match in 1976 when the then Green Eagles beat Egypt 3-2 in Addis Ababa.
That was followed with another victory in Kumasi Ghana in 1976 when a stalemated third place match with Tunisia was awarded to Nigeria.
Nigeria won the third third-place title in 1992 after a 2-1 defeat of Cameroon in Senegal.
The number four title was in Mali in 2002 when Nigeria beat the hosts, 1-0 in Mopti. The fifth title followed in the next edition, 2004 in Tunisia as Nigeria again beat Mali 2-1 in Monastir.
In 2006 Nigeria beat Senegal 1-0 in Senegal to ensure the Super Eagles did not come back empty handed.
The seventh third-place title was won in Angola 2010 when Nigeria beat Algeria 1-0 in Benguela.
