Darkness Eclipses NPFL - As Most of Its Matches Are Off Television

Most of us are in dark as to why Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is no longer broadcast live on tv.

Nobody, not that I know, has come out to give official statement why Supersports decided not to renew it's right to broadcast the elite football league in Nigeria, or did Shehu Dikko and his LMC tell us what's the next line of action egarding live broadcast of the league on tv.

I am not sure, but from what I read from Nairaland forum, one of the contributors said the underlying cause of the problem. African currencies have fallen against the dollar in recent times. Supersports pays for rights (including the NPFL rights) in dollars, while subscribers pay in African currencies.

Subscribers across Africa are vehemently opposed to increased subscription fees, prompting DSTV to release a statement that they won't increase the fees this year, except in Nigeria and South Africa. They've increased subscription fees in Nigeria.

DSTV/Multichoice is a business and they must cover their cost and make a profit, so something must give.

So now they've cancelled their contracts with the Ghanaian football league (last year), Kenyan football league (a few weeks ago), Nigerian football league (today), Nigerian basketball league (a few weeks ago), etc.

Well,  other broadcasters have taking up those rights. Startimes has gotten the rights to the Ghanaian league and Kwese Sports took over both the male and female Nigerian basketball leagues (they also now have the rights to NBA matches in Africa). But NPFL is yet to get a replacement for Supersports and that's rather strange.

We all know the implications of NPFL being off tv, the league will be in total darkness. It will be difficult to follow without visual contents and the league will lose more fans from the already low interest rate.
