NPFL Round Up: Akwa United Regain Top Spots
Akwa United reclaimed top spot in the Nigeria Professional Football League with a 2-1 victory against visiting Kwara United at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on a low-scoring matchday 23 on Sunday.
John Ubong Friday and Nasiru Jibril scored either side of half-time for the hosts and Wasiu Alalade grabbed a consolatory effort for Kwara United as Kennedy Boboye’s side climbed to 45 points to lead the log on goals difference from Kano Pillars who played out a goalless draw with Plateau United in Jos.
It also ended goalless in the two Oriental Derbies on Sunday, with struggling FC Ifeanyiubah sharing the spoils with Enugu Rangers in Nnewi and Enyimba playing out a goalless stalemate with Heartland FC in Aba.
Meanwhile, MFM FC’s resurgence shows little sign of abating as Oladayo Alabi scored the only goal to lift the Olukoya Boys past Dakkada at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.
The Lagos side has now won four and drawn two of their past six games to surge up the table to 9th with 34 points.
In Lafia, Nasarawa United pipped bottom side Adamawa United courtesy of Ebuka Anaekwe’s first-half winner and it was also a similar scoreline between Katsina United and relegation-threatened Warri Wolves with Samuel Nnoshiri scoring the only goal of the game as United ran out 1-0 winners.
Meanwhile, managerless Sunshine Stars’ have now failed to win in sixteen games after they lost 2-1 at Lobi Stars.
Stars whose former boss Gbenga Ogunbote resigned on Thursday due to poor results actually took a shock lead through Ogonna Uzochukwu’s 15th-minute effort but their lead lasted all of three minutes as John Lazarus restored parity and Ossy Martin scored what proved to be the winner in the 26th-minute.
