It has been a case of which to choose, either a foreign coach or an indigneous coach to take over the hot job of Nigeria national team - Super Eagles Head coach. While NFF technical committee are disposed to engage another foreign coach, the minister of sports Samuel Dare seems to be tinting toward some of our Ex-internationals.
Following the recommendation of NFF Technical and Development Sub-Committee, eight coaches have been pen down and are now under consideration.
According to our correspondence, a number of high-profile European coaches have been mentioned as possible replacements, with former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde among those under consideration by the Super Eagles chiefs.
1. Ernesto Valverde (Spain)
The Spaniard has been out of coaching since he was let go by the Catalan giants in January 2020. During his time at the Camp Nou, he was able to capture the LaLiga title on two occasions, a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa de Espana.
2. Laurent Blanc (France)
Laurent Blanc has a rich national team experience, having managed France from 2010 to 2012. He guided Les Bleus to the 2012 UEFA European Championship by topping their qualifying group, He will hope to replicate such successful run with the three-time African champions should he be hired by the NFF.
3. Phillip Cocu (Netherland)
Another candidate is former Netherlands midfielder Phillip Cocu. Although he won the Eredivisie title three times at PSV Eindhoven, a club he played for as well, he has had underwhelming spells at Fenerbahce and Derby County, only managing to accrue about a point a game during his time in Turkey and England.
4. António Conceição da Silva Oliveira (Portugal)
António Conceição da Silva Oliveira, known as Toni Conceição, led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to a third place in the just concluded AFCON 2021. The Portuguese football manager and former player who played as a right back. His playing career was spent mostly in the Primeira Liga at Braga, as well as Vizela and one appearance for Porto. He earned a sole cap for Portugal in 1988.
There are some local managers in contention as well.
5. Sunday Oliseh (Nigeria)
Various reports have suggested that former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh is interested in returning to lead the West Africans, with Nigeria sports minister for youth and sports development Sunday Dare said to be an admirer of the defensive midfielder-turned-coach, while there has also been mention of Emmanuel Amuneke, Daniel Amokachi and Finidi George in the mix, these are three Super Eagles legends.
