Nigeria’s Flamingos have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2022 women’s World Cup in India after defeating Chile 2-1 in their last Group B game on Monday.

It is the Flamingos’ second win of the tournament after thrashing New Zealand 4-0 in their second fixture.

Goals in each half from skipper Blessing Emmanuel and Bisola Mosaku sealed the win for the Flamingos.

Chile were awarded a late penalty which was just a consolation goal.

The Flamingos progress as runners-up in the group alongside Germany A who topped following a 3-1 win against New Zealand.

The Nigerian girls got off to a very good start as Emmanuel collected a pass from Opeyemi Ajakaye and hit a low shot from the edge of the box which flew past the Chilean keeper.

With eight minutes left Flamingos doubled their lead thanks to Mosaku who slotted home a headed knock down into the roof of the net.

In the 90th minute Tali Rovner pulled a goal back for Chile from the penalty spot, after a VAR check adjudged Omamuzo Edafe to have handled the ball inside the box.

The Flamingos will now face Group A winner in the quarter-finals.
