Super Falcons held on during the explosive encounter
which saw them come from behind twice to draw 3 – 3 in their first Group D
match against Sweden in the on-going FIFA women’s world cup in Winnipeg Canada.
Although, Nigeria ladies got punished by making some
careless mistakes from Swedish corner kicks – Desire Oparanozie’s own and poor
off-side trap that worked against them. But the Nigerians fought back like
wounded lions and equalized the two goals deficit, only to concede another one.
Yet Falcons attack was a handful for the Swedish
team. The attack was mostly initiated by Washington DC play maker Francisca Ordega,
who eventually won ‘best of the match;’ Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala
continually tormented the Swedish defense. Oshoala got the first equalizer and
just about 3 minutes to the end of the match. Ortega scored the second equalizer
which brought the game to a draw.
When asked in
the post match interview how far she thinks Nigeria can go in the tournament?
Ordega replied: “We (Nigeria) will go all the way to the finals. Keep faith and
Believe!
The calculation is this, if Super Falcon defeat
Australia and possibly draw against USA, they stand a good chance to equalify
for the knock out stage of the tournament – from then, anything can happen!
Super Falcons next match will be on Thursday against
Australia at Winnipeg stadium (By 10pm Nigeria time)
