Super Eagles Class of 94 - 25th Anniversary Celebration of Nigeria's Football Golden Era
The Super Eagles attained their highest peak in football in 1994 when they won the Africa Cup of Nations and made their debut at the World Cup. The team was so phenomenal that FIFA ranked Nigeria fifth in the world – the highest position ever achieved by an African football team.
Just in case you’d forgotten, the ’94 team bragged of legendary players like Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi, as well as leading to the discovery of icons like Victor Ikpeba, Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha.
Many say the off shoot of the 94 team was the Dream team which also won gold medal at the 1996 Olympic games, a period now referred to as Nigeria's football golden era. A period between 1994 - 2002 where players like Rasheed Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Victor Ikpeba and Nwankwo Kanu were crowned African player of the year respectively.
Come this April, it will be exactly 25 years since the '94 team achieved all that and, deservedly, there are plans to mark their silver jubilee this year in LPremium
CheerOnNigeria reports that the anniversary is being planned by sports administrator, Tony Nnacheta. Billed to last for three days, starting on April 26, it will witness the arrival of 37 football legends — from Africa... President George Weah, Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba... as well as the unveiling of a book and a documentary about the squad.
There will be A Match of the Legends at the Teslim Balogun Stadium between African Legends Vs Super Eagles Class of 94. and a remembrance procession for the fallen heroes like Stephen Keshi, Thompson Oliha, Rashidi Yekini and Coach Shaibu Amodu.
Well, the planned ceremonies aren’t just about the class of 94. The team also made history by becoming the first from Africa to win the Summer Olympics in 1996.
Fans will get a chance to see them in action again, as the players will reunite for an exhibition match against other African legends.
